Week 4: Assignment 1

In stage 1 of Understanding by Design, there are a few parts.
Established goals should be based on content standards. These are the long term goals that the teacher needs to make sure not to lose focus of. In my assignment last week my established goals were based off the content standards. It is important to simplify the content standards into bite size chunks.
The next part of Stage 1 UbD is Understandings. These should be the big ideas which are transferable. These big ideas are the meat and potatoes of the content. The meaningful part of the content and they connect the facts with necessary skills. In my Stage 1 outline, I looked at the established goals to determine what are the main things that the students need to understand.
Essential Questions should guide students towards theses understandings. They guide children through the lessons so that they are learning on their own. The teacher must make sure that these questions lead the children through the content and will help the students gain the most they can out of it. When I looked at my understandings the essential questions were clear. I asked questions which would lead students towards these understandings. For example, in a writing lesson I asked "is the information you are writing about relevant to your topic?". This corresponded to the understanding that students must have that information should be relevant to the topic at hand.
Knowledge and Skills are the "building blocks" of the desired understanding. The teacher may have an entire lesson in mind and what the students will understand through the lesson, but the students need to have these basic skills in order to have long term success. The knowledge and skills are based on what the goals are. Knowledge is the straightforward facts that should be learned. Skills are procedures and methods that students should be able to do and they require practice. To continue the example above about relevant information in writing, in the knowledge section i wrote that students will know that choosing relevant information is important. A skill they will be able to do is sift through the information to only find what is relevant.

Week 10: Assignment 2

Teaching Philosophy: In the past couple of years, the education world has shifted to incorporate technology. This shift to a more technologically focused education system, is a direct result of the technologically centered world we live in. Students must be well-trained to enter the world. As a teacher, I believe that it is very important for me to be fluent in the technological advancements going on in the world, to teach students how to use this technology through teaching with and about technology. One of my main beliefs is that the teacher must be constantly learning in order to expect her students to learn. The best teachers are the ones who really know their stuff. As a teacher who wants to implement technology, it is my job to stay on top of all the new technologies and only then can I implement them in my classroom. One way I can do this is by joining education centered social media groups and blogs who discuss ways to incorporate technology. Another wa...
